How do the Crooked Sky Farms Phoenix Valley CSAs work?
Members sign a contract agreeing to join a CSA community with a designated produce coordinator, pick-up location, day and time. Members commit to support our regional farmer and to share in the rewards and the risks of the farmer’s harvests, to complete the subscription session, and to pre-pay for the session. The Phoenix area member subscriptions run for a pre-paid 10-week session for $200 (equivalent to $20 per week). If joining after a session has begun, the price can be pro-rated. Phoenix sessions run consecutively – year round, and there will be an opportunity to renew your subscription at the end of each session. When your signed contract and full payment is received prior to the beginning of each session, your name will be added to the sign-in list. Each week you will sign-in and collect your weekly share (bring your own bag/box). No work is required from our CSA members, however, member volunteers often provide work-exchange to help the logistics of the CSA. Web development; newsletter production, loading, and coordinating assistance.
Each week, when you visit the CSA pickup site, you will sign in that you are picking up your share. When you are unable to pick up your produce on pickup day, we recommend that you ask a friend or neighbor to pick up for you. They should provide their name in your place on the sign-in sheet. If you cannot pick-up a weekly share, it will be donated to the food bank, or the charitable designation affiliated with your CSA pickup site. The produce will be in various crates in the pick-up area. Each crate will post the share portion you may take. Bring your own bags to gather your produce. Take the indicated portion from each crate.
Also, you will receive weekly notices by e-m listing that week's share, and providing several recipes to try using that week's produce. The timing of that e-m will depend on seasonal considerations, such as which field the produce is harvested from, when the share produce is harvested, and when your share decision is made based on what is mature and looking the best. Sometimes that is on the same day you pickup your share - so advance notice of share contents is not always possible.
What’s in the weekly share?
Produce selection varies season to season. Winter crops supply a variety of cooking and salad greens, root vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, and citrus. As the year progresses, peas, tomatoes, corn, onion, cucumber, squash, melons, and many more fresh vegetables and fruits become available. Commonly loved favorites are always included, and there is often an opportunity to try a new vegetable, or share a new recipe for preparing the bounteous harvest ! Although the share does not guarantee a particular quantity of produce, a weekly share usually includes a portion of 8 different items depending on what is in season. Since we farm year-round, the items vary throughout the year. Weekly portions generally supply a veggie/fruit portion daily for a couple or small family (about half a grocery bag full). Remember that heirloom vegetables are bred for flavor, not for looks or shelf life, therefore, they tend to bruise and spoil very easily if handled repeatedly. Your produce will last at least a week if handled gently.
Here is an example of what has been provided in past year’s autumn and spring shares:
[May 2] 4 grapefruit, 2 lb new red LaSoda potatoes, 0.4 lb salad mix, 1 lb sweet potatoes, 1 bunch vates kale, 2 yellow straightneck squash, 0.4 lb snow peas, 1 bunch cherry bell radishes or 1 artichoke.
[April 25]: Beauregard sweet potatoes, cilantro, garlic, navel oranges, new red LaSoda potatoes, salad mix, sugar snap peas, sweet onions
[April 18]: cabbage, carrots, garlic, pinto beans, salad mix, snow peas, spinach, sweet potatoes.
[Oct 25]: 2 apples, 2 lb potatoes, 1 lb tomatoes, 1/2 lb red bell peppers, 1 bunch turnips, 0.4 lb salad mix, 1 bunch red Russian kale, 0.8 lb roasted green chiles, herbs.
[Oct 11]: Potatoes, Cucumbers, Okra, Tomatoes, Braising Greens, Salad Mix, Roasted Chiles, Watermelons.
[Sep 27] 2 Onions, 1 lb Sweet Potatoes, 1/4 lb Green Beans, 1 lb Tomatoes, 2 Peaches, 2 Pears, 1 bunch Herb Mix (Basil, Mint, Lemongrass), Salad Mix.

HOW DO I JOIN?
• There are different contracts specific to which CSA location you are joining. You can request a contract by e-mail.
• Review the terms of contract carefully and consider whether a CSA is right for you. You are entering into an agreement to support the farm and CSA membership as a whole by paying full session in advance, and by cooperating with and through the CSA as it endeavors to meet its obligations. You are
committing to the opportunity and challenge to eat more healthily, to prepare meals using a variety of both common and unusual produce varieties, to learn more about how and where your produce comes from, and become aware of what is involved in the supply and demand of produce and its impact on farmers and consumers.
• Let us know by e-mail, which CSA you would like to join, the date you want to start, and that you are ready to mail the contract.
• Complete and mail the contract and payment by check to the address on the contract (keep a copy for your own records).
• You will receive an e-mail and/or phone call back from me acknowledging receipt of contract/payment, providing pickup details, and confirming that we, and you, are ready to begin.
• Prepare to enjoy the fresh produce!!!
CAN I MEET FARMER FRANK OR VISIT THE FARM?
There are two CSA member and public events each year - to which all CSA members are invited !!
These are scheduled between the most busy times at the fields, so that Farmer Frank has time to hang around and visit for the day. Members will be notified by e-m as soon as the events are scheduled (usually about 1 month prior to the event).
Also occasionally, Farmer Frank may accompany a weekly produce delivery and visit your CSA during pick-up hours.
