Improving Air Quality with GMO crops?

Frank mentioned to me last week that there is a government initiative designed to improve air quality.  I thought “hey, that’s great!”

However, upon reviewing the guide he was given regarding the methods of improving air quality, something stood out to Frank.  Suggested use of GMO or Transgenic Seeds.  Uh, what? If we’re trying to keep mother earth in her state of being most “natural” by eliminating machine exhaust and such air pollutants.  Does that even make sense to use GMOs?  On their side, they think GMOs are a good idea due to the fact that they need less tending to, thus better air quality.  Hey, we’re all for making the air cleaner but what are they thinking?

What are your thoughts?

Here’s the Arizona State Air Quality website.  Click on the Guide to Agricultural PM10 Best Management Practices (PDF) toward the bottom of the page for details.  http://azda.gov/act/airquality.htm

Please be patient - Pumpkin Patch still TBD

Dear Friends!

I haven’t heard from Frank yet as to his plans for the Pumkin Patch.
So please do not show up to our 40th St and Southern field unless we
say so here on the website. I’m sorry for any inconveniences.

Talk to you all soon!

New Header and Background Photos

Yes, your eyes aren’t deceiving you…we just updated the page with new pictures from the farm.

The background photo is an early picture of the silver queen corn (only a few weeks old).  We’re just about to harvest them now…can’t wait!

Then for the header…going clockwise starting at the sunflower here’s what you are looking at:

  • Tonia and the crew playing catch harvesting melons a few weeks ago.
  • A canary melon out in the field
  • Various lettuces
  • A french breakfast radish peeking out of the ground
  • Freckled head of lettuce
  • The Certified Naturally Grown logo (we aren’t the best at paperwork and got back on the bandwagon with them :) )
  • A twisted carrot.  One of those awesome freaks of nature.  Two carrots grew too close to each other and wrapped around one another as they grew in the ground.
  • Eight ball summer squash
  • Globe artichokes
  • Frank checking out his field tomatoes
  • A picturesque photo of the wheat field
  • Freshly harvested Sun Jewel melons piled up in the back of one of the carts we use at the farm
  • Patrick (my 2 year old) chowing down some yellow pear tomatoes
  • Victoria, Alvin, Frank, Tonia and Sergio harvesting I’itoi onions
